Born in Eskifjordur, Iceland, Thorsteinn began his studies with W. Keith Reed at the music school in Egilsstadir, Iceland in 1998. In the fall of 2003, he began his studies at Oklahoma University under the guidance of Salvatore Champagne. He was invited to attend the Music Academy of the West in the summer of 2004, where he studied with a number of world famous artists including Marilyn Horne and Warren Jones. He was one of four students at the Academy, who were chosen to perform a concert of Old American Folksongs by Aaron Copland, which was performed with Warren Jones at the piano.
Mr. Árbjörnsson completed his bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College Conservatory with Salvatore Champagne in May of 2006 and he then went on to cover Alfredo and sing the role of Gastone in La Traviata at the Aspen Music Festival in Aspen,Colorado. The summer of 2008 found Thorsteinn performing as an apprentice artist with the Santa Fe Opera.
His roles performed include Ferrando in Cosi Fan Tutte, Don Basilio in The Marriage of Figaro, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, The Sailor in Le Pauvre Matelot, Nemorino in L’Elisir d’Amore, Le Chevalier in Dialogues des Carmelites, Camille de Rossillon in The Merry Widow, and Brighella in Ariadne auf Naxos.
His concert solo performances include Magnificat by J.S. Bach, Carmina Burana by C. Orff, Petite Messe Solemnelle by Rossini, King David by Honegger, Elias by F. Mendelssohn, Coronation Mass by W.A. Mozart, and made his U.S. professional debut with the Cleveland Orchestra in Le Rossignol by Stravinsky conducted by Maestro Pierre Boulez.
